Leading Transformational Change
I’m certain you have heard the phrase, “change is the only constant”. Working in a firm that is progressively changing can be energizing and highly rewarding. Effective change leadership drives business, academic and athletic results. Transformational leadership provides major personal and team growth opportunities. Transformational change demands more transformational, not just transactional, forms of leading.
We are recommending that despite the COVID related challenges, that organizations take more bolder moves with change, than not.
Candidly, I don’t believe I would be anywhere nearly as capable in the diverse roles I am in now, if I had not been blessed to be leading and part of MANY global and far reaching transformational initiatives at GE, Citi, TIAA, The Ohio State University….and consulting with clients.
Despite the availability of a wide, diverse amount of literature and models on effectively leading organizational change, most of the organizations we work with need forms of assistance. Change success ratios are often low. This applies to business, schools, athletics and even ministry.
Here are some tips. Know that this all starts with you being CLEAR on YOUR leadership role in the change journey.
Assess your organizations/teams readiness for change
Engage (involve) the workforce as broadly as possible
Identify where there is or is not alignment, focused on mindset beliefs and behaviors
Use the culture to your advantage or start to invest in addressing culture gaps proactively
Reflect on whether you have the right leaders/leadership skills to execute the change or is there a need for developmental work (most often the case!)
Develop a series of decision making strategies on how you will productively address conflicts
Keep the communication updates frequent. Don’t fall into gaps of communication (creates a negative feeling).
