A Changing Society Means We Need To Adapt Our Communication
Society is changing. We control VERY little of it. Consider these big changes below that have been occurring that impact how we must lead.
Technology/internet
Social media
Youth identity focus, need for understanding and expression
Youth need for greater inclusion
COVID
Psychological safety needs
Social justice focus
DEI initiatives
Opinion rules over facts
And many more. This is just a short list.
All of the above are impacting how we must communicate. Adaptability to the new reality is an imperative; not just a nice to do. Words and tone people used 5-10 years ago (even less in some cases) that was acceptable then, no longer are. We can’t simply say “in love” with what worked well in the past.
The point here is that each of us must place greater emphasis on how we choose to intentionally personalize the words, tone and body language we use. Intentionality is the key word.
Be committed to rethinking and reseting how you communicate. The most powerful tool at your disposal is the use of your voice. It’s also an area that we tend to operate in default mode (autopilot), which causes “bind spots” and will not maximize how we need to influence and connect with others.
