Cultivating Sustained Well-Being & Resiliency
There are no shortage of books, movies, Ted-Talks, web sites and programs available on this topic. The levels of stress, anxiety and forms of depression continue to be elevated. Even with the availability of varied programs, overall wellness is not improving. Youth or adults are not sufficiently building up resiliency to be able to deal with stress…
I’ve research this over the years and have the benefit of speaking with a diverse group of clients, from high school students, athletes, law enforcement, my Ohio State University students, etc..
What I continue to hear is that while methods like: yoga, meditation, breathing are promoted, they are insufficient in terms of systematic training. We don’t actually “train” individuals on the well over 50 resiliency building methods. We assume that they will go to the website or read the book. Some will. Most won’t. And coupled with this, is the need for training that teachers individuals how to have a intentional mindset that enables them to develop new mental habits.
My view is that we need to train individuals in the varied and comprehensive methods that are practical and situationally easy to use. There are more than just 3-4 stress management methods. We need to teach them. That is the mission I am personally on with my programs with my clients.
