Making It STICK
There are many diverse forms of leadership, culture and resiliency building programs available and it’s great to offer those choices to everyone in their various leadership capacities.
A major challenge is getting these programs to stick, take hold and be sustainable so to elevate the organizations beliefs, behaviors and capabilities-and performance.
A key message here is that no about of note taking or training discussion will be a substitute for making a personal commitment (mindset belief) to a continuous journey of improvement-individually and for your team. “Believing” that one or a team is “good enough” as a leader in todays world is, to me, an ill fated way to look at things and can cause a leader and their team to lose ground quickly. Make this a journey.
Here are some tips for getting the (any) program to stick.
Have very clear goals and with that identify what obstacles might get in your way for achievement and have a plan to overcome them
Discuss what mindset beliefs need to be reset. Do a team based beliefs inventory. You can’t get to new behaviors without having the right beliefs first.
Use accountability to your advantage. There are 8 factors that go into accountability. Don’t just assume you will get it by making a statement. Repetition matters.
Build a values based culture. This is your “surround sound”. You need to get culture contagion in a positive manner. Be intentional and collaborative about doing this. It’s an every day build process to reinforce it.
Celebrate and recognize progress-daily. Err on the side of positive. The constant drip drip drip of dopamine fuels resiliency and you will need that to navigate around the obstacles that will come at you.
