Achieving Leadership Mastery Starts Here

What Is Holding YOU Back?!

What is holding you back from performing at your best and developing to your fullest of passions, desire and capacity? We all set goals in various ways and reach various levels of achievement. We all have forms of aspirations and vision of self. We all have the ability to put in the effort for personal gains AND influence others to be motivated.

Personal development can be a mental challenge though. Our brain habitually pulls us back to routine or easy. It can trick us into believing that we are “good enough”. It’s comfortable to just “show up” at times and not fully invest ourselves. Some might even feel satisfaction of complaining or faulting others when we don’t achieve or perform to our best.

However, in our highly competitive, high velocity and dynamic world, not growing personally, can translate to actually losing ground. If you want to put yourself in the best position of success and to build your confidence, you must immerse and invest yourself to get better with every opportunity and every “rep” (mental and physical).

Examples:

Be the first to reach out to help someone in need

Be the first to stand up to present at your group, team or classroom

Be the first at practice or at the weight room for conditioning

Be the one who puts creative thought into team based projects

Be the first to congratulate someone for their accomplishments

Be the first to help a team get organized when things seem disorganized

Be the one who shows that personal development is a life long commitment

Be the one who encourages others who seem to be just “showing up” on a cruise control mindset

Be the one who feels most confident (not ego), that you put in the work in advance of the meeting, practice or game, so that you are fully READY to execute

Be the one to recognize that it’s not always “only about you”

When you study what creates success, there are a number of key, stand out factors that apply to each of us. Within those factors there are many skills and behaviors we need to focus on, so there is no simple formula.

Those big 3 factors are positive mindset, perseverance and adaptability. Your mindset will fuel your outlook and willingness to stay accountable to goals and growth and putting in your best effort. A positive mindset is a big part of building up your emotional resiliency resources and wellness functions. We need to function well to perform well, not the other way around.

Your perseverance will enable you to stay strong and hungry to succeed through the struggles and challenges you will certainly face. Finally, your “willingness” to adapt will help you recognize that growth and success is not a straight line, rather, it involves continuous evaluation of options, pros/cons, alternatives, assessing risks and opportunities and finding ways to work around the obstacles. Remember that while these “big 3” are personally important, each of us must do our job to influence others focus on them as well.

Ask yourself: Are you able to keep a positive, growth oriented mindset? Have you been persevering through the challenges? Are you fully applying yourself? Is your best effort REALLY your best effort? Do you have a plan that identifies where and when you will need to adapt? Reflect on those. Keep a daily journal of your progress on the “Big 3” and you will see the benefits. Also keep a log of when YOU know you just “showed up” and didn’t commit “all in”.
