Get The REPS In
I can apply what i am going to tell you next to just about everything. But here, it’s about resilience-to stress, anxiety and adversity. Resilience is not just about who you currently are, but what you can become.
Resilience is foundational to most effective execution performance of all we do. You can’t think clearly enough and make sound decisions if stress and anxiety constantly consume and cloud your mind and judgement-as just one example. There are 1000’s of others. Resilience precedes excellence. You can prepare and practice for days, but when the stage lights come on, you must be in command of your thoughts to deliver. Stress and anxiety can flood our brain with cortisol, which creates a true fight of focus between our pre-frontal cortex (where we do our best thinking) and our emotional control center (our amygdala where impulsivity can rule).
Stress conditioning sets the stage for success and best possible performance..
Everyone likes formulas, so here is a formula you can use to remind yourself on what it takes to manage stress and condition.
But, you’ve got to get the “REPS” in to make it work for you.
Resilience=Experience+Perspective (really mindset)+Strategies. R=E+P+S. REPS.
Experience is putting yourself to the test through diverse, challenging situations. Perspective (mindset beliefs and attitude) is making certain you are looking at the situation clearly and being willing to adapt. Stategies are about which of the 50+ resilience strategies (self talk management, emotional setting, reframing, optimism, etc. etc.) you are using to deal with stress and adversity in the moment or in the future.
Are you using the whole REPS formula or just relying on “experience” (which is a trial and error approach)??
Are you really getting enough REPS in?
