Getting To The Right Behaviors Through Adjusting Beliefs and Values
We often attempt to “leap” to getting behavioral change or criticize others for not adopting change fast or consistently enough. This is true wit academics, athletics, business and religion. We are often looking for shortcuts for behavior change adoption, which in an increasingly complex world, simply don’t exist.
To get to real behavioral change, one has to start WAY up front and reexamine beliefs. Our beliefs are what we hold to be true. Those beliefs drive what’s important, our values. We like to refer to the word “value”, but candidly, do not dig deep enough on understanding them, or use them to manage our decision processes. Spend some time to dig deeper on what you really value and NOT just the surface level stuff.
Values drive attitudes and then behaviors. So to get to new or more consistent behaviors, one can think about reverse engineering how to get there, with new attitudes, updated values and in the beginning reexamined beliefs.
